Police records are kept in abundance. This is both a bad and good thing. Bad because it means there are a lot of criminals out there; good because the police are keeping track of criminal activity. Indeed, where would we be without the nation's local law enforcement agencies?

When police book people on criminal charges, notes are taken and details are filed away for eternal reference. As more and more people break the law, more and more files and made or amended. Police records grow and while continuous criminal activity is a discouraging thing, all the record taking actually helps in future cases.Police criminal records help profilers match suspects to actual convicts. Say there was a fire at a local gymnasium. It looks like foul play. The police gather names and round up suspects. When they scan their database for names of local arson felons they might pull up a few profiles and find a match. That's how police records work. They help narrow down and find people with prior convictions, bringing them to justice if they have broken the law again.

If you're looking for certain information on criminals at large you may go to the police; public records are often available. In some cases, let's say where a manhunt is underway for a serial killer or an escaped convict is being tracked, certain police records are made public in an attempt to inform people and encourage them to help with the investigation.Not all data is made public, however, so if you're looking for specific details regarding a person's criminal background, you may not get your hands on the information you want. Some websites and agencies claim to be able to provide comprehensive police records but that is all pie in the sky; the only agency that has a comprehensive network of police records is the FBI and all the information is classified. If any information is released by them it's limited.

If you ever commit a crime and are caught, it will be recorded forever. Your police record will always reflect the charges against you and can adversely affect your life. It might be harder to find jobs, get credit loans, or travel abroad. Whenever your background is scrutinized (during a job application or when renting a new apartment etc) your police records will show up and affect the outcome of your situation. It's not a great thing to be filed wit the police with an offense, or series of offenses, listed next to your name. Your past will directly influence your future.In short, police records play an important role in keeping communities in check. They help law enforcement control crime rates and eliminate felonies. Police records may be a hindrance to some ex-cons trying to make a decent life but that is the price they have to pay for breaking the law. We need police records to help keep society a safe place to live in.
