Criminal History - Criminal Secrets Revealed

Criminals try their darn best to blend into society; they obviously don't want to be caught. So keeping your wits about you and not dismissing certain behavior may just help save future lives. You can never tell if a person has a criminal history or not.

The criminal history of a person is something most people become curious about after a person acts strangely or in ways you don't often observe in others. Ever had the feeling that someone you know was hiding a secret past? Ever wondered why your quiet next door neighbor loved to be around kids all the time? Ever had the feeling that some people in your neighborhood are up to things other than living ordinary lives?

These may sound like paranoid thoughts and maybe in some cases they are. But in this day and age, it pays to be a little inquisitive and on your guard at times. How many times have we read a news report about a captured sex-offender and the neighbors say things like, "I never would have thought he was capable of something like that" or "He always seemed a really nice person..."?

Criminal History - Going Back in Time

Criminal history records exist all across the nation. From statewide indexes to county level records _ if someone has broken the law and been convicted, it's out there. However, not everything is public access and that's something you need to bear in mind, especially if you want to check the criminal history of a certain person. He may have extensive theft or fraud convictions to his name _ he may even be a repeat sex-offender _ but sometimes, this kind of information is blatantly not available for ordinary people. Unless you go the black market (which is illegal and purveyors of confidential information can be prosecuted by the law) your criminal history searches are limited.

That's not to say conducting a criminal history search is going to be useless. There's still much information out there and in many cases, it's enough to help you determine if your next door neighbor has a past you'd rather not know about. The question is where do you look?

Criminal History - The Online Hunt for Clues

The internet offers many websites that can help you in your examination of a person's criminal history. Sites like the American Probation and Parole Association or Courts.net can offer information that just might reveal more than you bargained for. There are also many online criminal history databases that can be helpful in your investigation. Such databases, however, are limited (only the FBI can legitimately claim to have comprehensive information on the nation's criminals and this data is classified). Your online search can yield fruit, just don't expect to land bucket loads of juicy tidbits on other people's personal lives.

The information you do manage to gather, however, must be used in the most discreet manner possible. If your suspicions regarding a particular person are proven true, you must act accordingly and bring the information to the police. They can provide assistance when dealing with your situation. If you wish, you can bring the information to a private investigator for further assistance and perhaps even consult your lawyer for further counsel. Work within the law, never outside of it. The last thing you want is to rack up a criminal history of your own.
